Dad Day

To Shepherd:

Yesterday before leaving for school, you asked if we could have a Dad Day. You meant, “Can me and you go do stuff?”

You made me feel quite special at this request!

We ended up going to Town Hardware to get a beamo (big flying frisbee) and going to Pisgah to throw it in the field (they were closed). Then, we went to Lake Tomahawk and did a lap around the lake. And finally, we went to dinner together at My Father’s Pizza which was your idea, and which you thought was pretty brilliant, because it directly related to the dad day.

This White Oak on Church St. outside of the Methodist Church is estimated to have started growing in 1780! I told you this was 4 years after our country was founded, and surely before people were shopping in Black Mountain, but you didn’t really mind that and continued asking questions about the branches and the leaves – good on you!

It was wonderful sitting down with you for dinner. You got a big glass of lemonade. I’m not sure why the waiter brought it in an adult glass, but I’m glad he did; it felt right for you. I asked you if I was doing ok as a dad and you said I was. I told you I wished I were more patient with you. Told you I loved you and I’m proud of you.

Then at the end of dinner you started out like you had a massive stomach ache and were moaning about it quite frequently. So we rushed to get the check and box up our pizza to get home, and as we walked up the stairs out of my fathers and you saw a gum ball machine you straightened out and said you felt better. Funny stuff.

Great Dad Day 🙂 thanks for inviting me!
