Liked the book. Definitely gives useful frameworks by naming desire and then trying to move away from bad models of it or transform it into good desire.
I want what I want because I want it. Intrinsic vs. extrinsic.
Don’t feel the need to do a full write out of my thoughts. I think the highlights I put in it are sufficient for this book.
Generally, I think it’s successful because it had me convinced early that mimetics are important and worth transforming.
Three quick bullet points of things I read at the end of the book that I think fairly capture what I found valuable in it:
- “Stalk your greatest desire. When you find it, let all of your lesser desires be transformed so that they serve the greatest one.”
- “We can’t access our desires without models.”
- “Our choice is between living an unintentionally mimetic life or doing the hard work of cultivating thick desires.”
I think I must go and find what my greatest desire is.
