Thoughts from my run #2

  1. Karl Ove Knausgaard doesn’t really edit his books. Heard this on an interview with Tyler Cowen where he was talking about this painter he admires and how he’d just paint as a way of exploring something and that was the point. So there’s some masterpieces, some he never finished; he even had some that were not good. And Knausgaard follows this in his writing it sounds like. It’s one of the first serious people I’ve heard say they write and then publish so they can move on to the next thing. This is how I operate in my own writing, so I really admire it and am glad to have it as a reference – and honestly, have it as a bit of permission too.
  2. When I finished The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, I couldn’t figure it was ‘about’ much. Now, I think it was about Murakami dealing with confusion. So many of the scenes and characters were confusing. Likely, this isn’t what the book is ‘about’, but it’s what I got out of it and I’m not sure what the difference would be.
  3. On our family campout with church this weekend at Rockmont, both Shepherd and Greta went on a ~3 mile hike that involved some significant elevation gain. Not only that, the trail was very rocky, slick from rain, and typical North Carolina rainforest-y. They did such a good job and had great attitudes. At times, I got frustrated with Greta for this or that reason, but for a three year old hiking that distance, nature of trail, and elevation gain she did amazingly. I kick myself for getting frustrated with the kids. Should I expect myself to react differently though, on average? I don’t think so. I am human.
